Steps for Parents

Step 1: Contact Us

Becoming a foster parent is a significant decision. We are happy to talk with you about your interest and answer any questions you may have. We will ask basic questions about you and your immediate family members. If you like, we will send you additional information in the mail or connect you with a Plummer foster parent. You may contact us at 978-935-9555 or visit our website at

Step 2: Get to know Plummer and Foster Care Better

We will schedule an Informational Meeting with you to tell you about the kids that Plummer serves, highlight the joys and challenges of parenting them, and let you know how you can make a difference in their life.

Step 3: Participate in Pre-service Training

The children and youth in foster care often have special needs due to the traumatic experiences that brought them into care. Therefore, a pre-service (MAPP) training is provided to ensure that you have the information necessary to make an informed decision about becoming a foster parent. The training includes nine, three hour sessions.

Step 4: Complete a Home Study

Once you have completed pre-service training and a decision has been made for you to continue with the process, we will conduct a home study. A social worker will visit your home to talk with you and others living in your home, including children and other adults. These face-to-face meetings are more in-depth than previous ones and will provide our staff an opportunity to learn more about your family and the ways in which we can best support you.
